Accidental death and dismemberment insurance in Thailand
Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance policies are available in two forms in Thailand:
- As a stand-alone policy
- As an add-on to a life insurance plan
These plans are designed to insure you against accidental loss of life or the loss of use of body parts and/or functions. While we can hope that most we will not need to claim on such policies, should a tragedy befall you, an AD&D policy will pay out to your beneficiaries to help cover related medical or funeral costs.
How does AD&D insurance work?
AD&D policies are designed to provide beneficiaries of a policy with money should the policyholder meet an unexpected end via an accident. Should this happen, the policy will pay out a set amount to the people you have named as beneficiaries on your plan.
When considering AD&D insurance, you should be very clear about what your policy details and schedule say. There can be some very strict rules about what constitutes an accidental death. In particular, these plans can cover fatalities related to:
- Exposure to the elements
- Traffic accidents
- Homicide
- Falls or drownings
- Accidents caused by heavy equipment

What does it mean by dismemberment?
Where a policyholder finds themselves facing the loss of a body part, or even just the loss of a particular bodily function, an AD&D policy may pay out a designated amount as coverage. Situations that can fall under dismemberment can include:
- Loss of a limb, such as an leg or foot
- Lost of sight, hearing, or speech
- Permanent paralysis
It can be rare for an accidental death and dismemberment policy to pay out 100%, but you should contact our advisors to find out more.
Common exclusions from accidental death and dismemberment policies
When it comes to AD&D policies, the exclusions a policy will not cover will be listed in the policy's documentation. In most cases, exclusions will include suicide, death from an illness, and injuries related to war or conflicts.
Drug overdoses can also be part of the exclusion lists, as can incidents where non-prescription drugs are involved, or injury or death related to participating in a professional sporting capacity.
