Legal abortions are now available at 110 locations in Thailand
Women in Thailand during their 12th to 20th weeks of pregnancy can now get a legal abortion. But they must arrange a consultation with medical professionals first at any of the 110 participating hospitals and clinics.
The law, which came into effect on October 27th, 2022, marks an important milestone for women who are not ready to have a child and require termination through the proper channels. This article by Pacific Prime Thailand covers the finer details and whether health insurers will cover abortions or not.
Thailand’s Medical Council gives the green light
The Public Health Ministry’s directive on legal abortions in Thailand has been officially approved by the Thai Medical Council. It paves the way for women to seek termination if they are not ready for pregnancy. The news also supports medical professionals who can now conduct abortions without worrying about repercussions for carrying out a termination under the new rules.
How does the new regulation work?
For pregnancies up to the 20th week, women can arrange for an abortion at a medical facility on their own. However, after the 20th week, the pregnancy must be carried to term.
Where to get an abortion in Thailand?
There are authorized hospitals and clinics across 39 provinces nationwide where you can seek an abortion. If you are pregnant up to the 20th week, you should first phone the 1663 hotline or visit the rsathai.org website for more information regarding abortion services. Thai women may utilize their gold health cards at participating state hospitals to get healthcare treatment.
Will your health insurance plan cover an elective abortion?
Generally speaking, a standard health insurance plan will not cover elective abortions unless there’s a complication, and medical intervention and treatment are necessary. If you experience a miscarriage and your child has not survived the pregnancy, hospitals may perform an ”abortion” treatment. If this is the case, your insurer may cover it if your policy has maternity complications built in.
